The World will end on Wednesday, September 10!

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe will be activated on September 10. The LHC is the world’s largest particle accelerator at a 17 mile circumference. The previous largest accelerator is in our backyard, just outside Chicago, at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), which with a circumference of 4 miles, is dwarfed by the LHC.

So, why will the World end? Some scientists believe that the LHC, while trying to produce the Higgs boson (or God Particle) (The Higgs boson has never been observed, believed to be created just after the Big Bang), will create a black hole that will devour the Earth and all matter around it.

Oh well.

But really, September 10 is not the problem. September 10 at the LHC is more of just a test run, making sure the investment is working properly. What you really have to be paying attention to is October 21. That is the day that the first high-energy collisions are scheduled to take place. I’ll call you on 10/22 to make sure you are OK.
